Manufactured for making jewelry, the man made stone is also widely used by knife makers, as it makes quite extraordinary handles.
This material is called many names like Recon Stone, Composite Reconstructed Stone, Larimar and Syntho-Tech Gemstone, and is described by distributors in their way:
Composite Reconstructed Stone is a mixture of the natural crushed stone and a strong acrylic resins to provide an interesting and inexpensive alternative to its natural, costly counterpart.
Recon stone is a synthetic material made of natural gems and mineral additives.
Larimar - Syntho-Tech Gemstone material is made from 86% natural stone.
Sold by cast bricks, or cut to blocks, slabs and scales. The price is up there at $3.13/ounce, plus there is a cutting charge of $5 per each slab cut.
Regardless - This highly desirable knife handle material can be worked with ordinary knife making tools and equipment, no lapidary equipment is required.
But it should be worked slowly and with caution because it is as fragile as the natural stone - it can break if dropped on a hard surface, or split if drilling too fast.
There may be a few manufacturers out there making the stuff, and many Suppliers of knife materials, but the largest manufacturer in the world is:
RT Research Corporation in Tempe Arizona, USA, and their largest Supplier/distributor with over 60 colors available is
Masecraft Supply Company
