BUFFING
|
To add confusion to the variety, some buffing and polishing compounds are
described by different suppliers differently and many different brands are
identical for all practical purposes.
To this day I have not found a source for the dark green chrome/diamond supper
fast cutting compound which was around in sixties in the aircraft industry. It
came in bars and 45 gal drums and went on a felt wheels pretty sticky, staying
melted on your knife as you worked. This one could whisk away the scratches
from 100 grit to a mirror finish on metals in no time flat, no other rouges
were required or around. This was the production stuff - hard to imagine
polishing 747 one grit at the time. :)
The compounds are separated into Greaseless and Grease base
Greaseless are available in three types. Solid, Sausage-like, wrapped in plastic tubes, Brush on Paste, or glue on abrasive grit - powder, in containers. Greaseless compounds work well on all muslin and felt wheels.
Glue based - usually come in plastic 2lb tubes. Builds up a good head and
remains on the wheel. The Aluminum Oxide grit is uniform in size, cutting
clean and sharp. Available in grits from 80 - 300.
To apply the the face of the wheel, simply turn on your buffing machine and
hold the compound to the wheel. The friction of the wheel will melt the
compound to the wheel. Overloading will just fling the compound off. Ready to
use after a few seconds.
Keep tightly sealed, refrigerate if possible. Shelf life = 6 month.
cuts sharper and faster than the regular stuff in plastic tubes, also lasts
longer ( 3 to 4 hrs without having to re-apply).
Easy to use, less loading of wheels will save time. Absolutely no fling off
with this product when properly used. Apply to the face of the wheel smoothly
and evenly with a small soft brush or your fingers, rub it in the nap of a new
wheel. Allow to dry overnight, if possible.
The compound dries hard so you might want to break it up some and remove the
loose grit by holding an old file up against the running wheel. Now ready to
use.
Available grits from 150 - 800. Shelf life - 6 to 8 month, 10 oz
containers.
water based products that washes clean with water. Used from final polish
preparation to a final high gloss luster finish.
Can be used by hand or wheel. Comes in 8, 16 ounce jars, 360 grams.
The same powder used in brush on compound, applied by first coating the wheel
surface in glue than rolling the powder on.
Used mostly on felt or paper wheels. Available in 150 to 800 grits, 6 oz
containers.
Greaseless solid compounds come in the plastic casing which you have to cut
open to use the compound.
Immediately after use, reseal in the Zip-lock bag and remove as much air as
possible. Make sure they remain sealed to prevent drying. Store in the cool
place, refrigerator is the best, especially in the summer.
The brush on type is supplied in the re closable plastic jar. Keep the lid
tightly sealed when not in use. Store in the cool place. They are water
soluble and you may add a few drops of water if they begin to dry out. Do not
add TOO MUCH water, as this can destroy the compounds.
