instead of elephant ivory.
This is NOT Composite Ivory.
This one is a cast polyester with
the color and other characteristics of real ivory.
It can be drilled,
machined, threaded and turned; it does not yellow with age and is highly
resistant to chemicals.

Scrimcast - is a new formula product which might be used
instead of real ivory, fossil ivory, horn or bone.
This one is with a twist the scrimshaw or other art is cast right into
the handle - many choices of art works are available.
This material
is hard, impervious to weather and wear.
One of the Advantages is that the handle can be cast right onto a finished knife
blank,
very little finishing touch up is needed.
“Wooly Mammoths“ - are extinct herbivorous mammals that had long, dense hair and underfur, very long tusks, a long nose, large ears, and lived throughout the world. There were at least four mammoth species that lived from about 2 million years ago to 9,000 years ago, millions of years after the dinosaurs went extinct. They are closely related to modern-day Indian elephants (they have common ancestor) and evolved during the same period. Mammoths died out while the elephant’s ancestor did not—we do not know why.
Mammoth tusks grew in a variety of shapes, some were straight, some were curved; the longest were up to 13 feet (4 m) long and weighed hundreds of pounds. The tusks were used in mating rituals, for protection, and for digging in the snow for food. Much of our knowledge of mammoths is from cave drawings and from mummified mammoths found in Siberian ice. Mammoths had longer tusks than Mastodons another elephant-like animal that evolved during the same period.
Today mammoth ivory is found during mining operations, in areas with glacial activity, as a result of erosion, and during deep-sea fishing operations. Generally, only ivory that has been in the permafrost in the far north (and therefore not subject to freezing and thawing) is suitable for use. Mammoth ivory is used for carving, to make jewelry, knife handles, and pistol grips.
The outer surface of mammoth tusks is called bark ivory (like the bark on a tree). This outer ivory will occasionally have lines in its surface (called bark lines) and represent the normal wear on the outer ivory from the animal using the tusk.

KUDU | 41" long | This is the largest African horn suppliers sell. It must be cut and flattened. A little extra work, but the translucent to pink to black coloring is beautiful and well worth the effort. |
GEMSBOK (Oryx) | 32" long | Its color is black. Long straight horn with some ribbing. The top can be flattened for full tang, but it gets solid fast and its best use is for hidden tang knife handles. |
MERINO SHEEP | 27" long | Domestic sheep horn. When cut and flattened, you will get a wide variety of colors along with translucent to black. It takes some extra work, but it is well worth the effort. |
MERINO SCALES | 4" x 1-1/4" | Scales are cut and flattened. |
IMPALA | 19" long | Black, Spiral horn with ribbing, use for hidden tang knives. |
BLESBOK | 12" long | Black. Similar to Impala but slightly wavier, shorter and straighter, also used for hidden tang knife handles. |
SPRINGBOK (Male) | 10" long | Black. Similar in size and texture to Blesbok. A good choice for hidden tang knives. |
SPRINGBOK (Female) | 9" long | Black. The smallest of the supplier's horns, it is good for small hunters or steak knives. |
OX HORN | 1/4" x 1-1/2" x 5" | - Color varies from almost honey clear and slightly greenish to black with honey streaks and variations in between. |
CARIBOU | Ask for size | Something different. White to lavender and tans. Good for scrimshaw. |
ELK | Crowns, Tines & Tips | Often overlooked but makes great handles. Can be scrimshawed. Try and old cracked piece, add a little dye and supper glue. |
DEER CROWNS | 4" to 5" in length. | Some have cracks in them. |
SEA COW | Assorted sizes | Stellar Sea Cow ancient bone from Alaska. Makes a very attractive handle. Strongly resembles Oosic when polished. Can be used for full or hidden tangs. |
Oosic is a penile bone of the walrus. This is an excellent and sought after
handle material for custom made knives. It polishes like a bone or stag.
The color ranges from dark brown for an old fossilized specimen to lighter
shades to almost off white, and is dependent upon the degree of fossilization
and the minerals in which it was aged. Price depends on size, density and
color.
